ARCH1201 - Project 2: Room and Narrative - Concept

Narrative,
In a silent morning, a female, who is pouring milk with a MYSTERIOUS FACE and UNPREDICTABLE THOUGHT, has been seen as one of the LOWEST STAGE people in the PYRAMID SOCIETY.

The basic structural shape of prism was inspired by a folded paper.

The space I was meant to create is an enclosure with a little gap to let the light come inside.

There are three levels in the big space which represent three social stages.

The "wall" is going to be thick to make the interior dark.

Light can come in from the bottom and two sides. So the middle top part is very dark.

Random box spaces everywhere represent the unpredictable thought in that female's brain.

For the illusion that the top floor looks clearer and simpler than the lower ones, actually that space is for the top stage people's unknown thought. For the volume in the prism, the space of top level is very narrow. For the top stage people, their mind would be very unexpected and not having any clue. In other words, although the lower stage people's mind is messier, it is clearly showing in front of "you" rather than "unpredictable" nothing.

ARCH1201 - Project 2: Room and Narrative - Site

Narrative,
In a SILENT MORNING, a female, who is pouring milk with a mysterious face and unpredictable thought, has been seen as one of the lowest stage people in the pyramid society.

The site is located in Nanjing, China. It is a sets of mountain villas surrounding a broad lake. The expected position for this project is right on the "cape" of that lake. The purposes of choosing the cape is to create a quite environment which stands alone from the crowded world, and a broad view to get direct sunshine without covering. It is also the feeling that the painting gives me.

ARCH1201 - Project 2: Room and Narrative - Painting Chosen

Artist - Johannes Vermeer
Year - c. 1657–1658 (though estimates differ)
Type - Oil on canvas
Dimensions - 45.5 cm × 41 cm (17⅞ in × 16⅛ in)
Location - Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The painting I chose was produced by a Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. This 17's work clearly shows a kitchen or housemaid (a low-ranking servant) in a plain room carefully pouring milk into a squat earthenware container on a table. Also on the table are various types of bread. A foot warmer is on the floor behind her, near Delft wall tiles depicting Cupid (to the viewer's left) and a figure with a pole (to the right). Light enters the room through a sash window to the left. A foot warmer sits on the floor behind the maid, a young, sturdily built woman wearing a crisp linen cap, a blue apron and work sleeves pushed up from her thick forearms. (source: WIKI)
