ARCH1201 - Project 2: Room and Narrative - Painting Chosen

Artist - Johannes Vermeer
Year - c. 1657–1658 (though estimates differ)
Type - Oil on canvas
Dimensions - 45.5 cm × 41 cm (17⅞ in × 16⅛ in)
Location - Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The painting I chose was produced by a Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. This 17's work clearly shows a kitchen or housemaid (a low-ranking servant) in a plain room carefully pouring milk into a squat earthenware container on a table. Also on the table are various types of bread. A foot warmer is on the floor behind her, near Delft wall tiles depicting Cupid (to the viewer's left) and a figure with a pole (to the right). Light enters the room through a sash window to the left. A foot warmer sits on the floor behind the maid, a young, sturdily built woman wearing a crisp linen cap, a blue apron and work sleeves pushed up from her thick forearms. (source: WIKI)

Narrative,
In a silent morning, a female, who is pouring milk with a mysterious face and unpredictable thought, has been seen as one of the lowest stage people in the pyramid society.
